1.Chuxiong/ Da Yao
PTS 3 took place from 4- 9 May 2010 in Da Yao and Chuxiong. There were approximately 50 participants in each venue and training sessions were given by Jackie and Paola on the first and final day of the course. For the other 4 days, three lessons were observed per day and written and oral feedback given by the trainer. The main focus was receptive skills, using English throughout the whole lesson and increasing student talk time in lessons.
Both local researchers, Charles and Margaret were very hospitable and attended to any needs of the trainers and participants. Participation of the teachers was extremely commendable, especially the 12 teachers in each area who had been asked to teach. The trainers were very happy with the level of teaching observed and the quality of the feedback provided by the observers, and we hope that the teachers have found the oral and written feedback helpful for their future teaching.
It’s been agreed upon that during the next visit we will travel to schools in surrounding areas to do observations. It was a pleasure to meet and train the participants and we look forward to travelling to Yunnan to work with the teachers again in autumn. 2.The Practical teaching Skills course began with an Opening Ceremony conducted by Mr Liu, Vice Director of Chuxiong Prefecture of Yunnan. In his speech he indicated the value of constantly upgrading skills in today’s fast developing world to maintain the sort of growth and development that China needs. He also spoke of the high value that the Education board puts on the efforts the teachers are making to improve both their own skills and the school ambience.
In reply Mr. G Holderness, Head Trainer of General Plan emphasized the leadership role that the Education Board is playing in raising the awareness and performance levels of everyone involved from the researchers to the teachers. He also praised the teachers who had scored a 100% success rate in the previous phase, TKT training.
The course began with considerable enthusiasm and high commitment from the teachers which is producing good results.
3.From 2009-10-25 to 2009-10-30, Nanhui PTS Group One successfully had its’ first face to face input taught by Jackie. CPs and the trainer had smooth and sufficient communication during the input and the observation & feedback session. All 20 CPs did the training with active participation and thought highly about the training quality.Of course, the training wouldn’t be so successful without the great support from the leaders of Nanhui Teachers College. The training of Group Two is going to start in early November. Please pay attention to relevant notice.
4.In August 2009 Shanghai General Plan Education Institute and Minhang Teachers College signed the Cooperation Agreement of IHL-GP English Teacher Training, aiming to strengthen Minhang junior level English teachers’ teaching languages and background knowledge. It is hoped that through this training Minhang English teaching can form its own teaching characteristics and accomplish a big leap on the teaching development. The training will be delivered under the course of Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) to Minhang’s primary and junior English teachers who did not graduate with English language or English teaching related degrees. The TKT training will start on 2009-11-7, have its intensive face to face input in July 2010, and end in November 2010.
5.A historic agreement was signed between General Plan/ International House and Maashan Foreign Language School to cooperate on an upgrading training scheme for English language teachers. The training marks an important step forward for both parties. The school has recently been authorized to be a foreign language school and the agreement indicates their determination to raise their standards to the highest possible level. For GP/IHL, it also marks a new development as it the first partnership with an individual school. All agree, it is an exciting initiative to combine the best of east and west acknowledging our differences in nature to produce an excellent course to benefit all.
6.The TKT training in Nanhui has been successfully concluded for the period of one year. The professional training related to language ,language use and the cultural background and practice of language teaching and learning。 The training contents included three modules and an online study which introduces CPs to concepts and teaching and learning terms central to TKT.This is in order to introduce CPs to the main current theories, and to assess their usefulness to the classroom environment, and to provide materials and activities that give CPs opportunities for professional development.80 CPs took the final test on the morning of May 25th 2009.
7.The third module of TT training was held in Yanji from 18 May to 23 May. The aim of this training was to develop trainees’ ability to observe and give feedback to peers. All trainees were divided into two groups, and each group observed 7 lessons. Every trainee worked hard and submitted the assignments on time, particularly did very well on-line learning module, so all 14 trainees received certificates from International House London. |
8.With the unified deployment by Pudong Social Bureau, the dedicated organization by Pudong Educational and Development Institute and the joint efforts made by the General Plan , the ICELT project was successfully completed on May in 2009. The course made use of the Cambridge ICELT training system. There are 37 CPs participating in this training; among which 5 are CPs from elementary school,18 from middle school and 14 from senior high school. The content includes language knowledge and language awareness, English teaching and learning background, material usage, teaching and learning (planning and management), assessment, supervision and evaluation, the professional development of teachers, teacher’s language, etc. The achievements are as follows:Each CP has written 8 monographs through the four modules of ICELT study. All CPs contributed 296 articles and 148 class practices and evaluations.
During ICELT training, all CPs came to understand western education values and acknowledge partial ideas which can be put into practice by CPs in China
To a certain extent, ICELT renews and expands the CPs knowledge and professional skills and improves their theoretical level as well as teaching and learning ability. The CPs possesses the capacity to develop their thoughts within the teaching environment. They are also able to adopt effective teaching measures to handle the practical situation in China. The CPs have enhanced their professional knowledge as well. Trainers gave personalized feedback based on each CPs’classroom situation. They learned more about the current Chinese teachers working in China and the students studying behavior. Consequently, trainers can now carry out more effective training work in the future.
